This jig is the easiest way to make box joints because the work moves over the jig. That means there's less chance for error and better results than jigs that require moving both the jig & the work for each cut. Check out the 4553 Upgrade Kit, which is a popular accessory for the 4555 Box Joint Jig.

  • Cuts any box joint between 1/8" to 13/16".
  • Includes a 24" aluminum Ultra Track with bit/blade cutout and replaceable MDF sub-fences.
  • Adjustable aluminum pins prevent part slippage.
  • Attaches to any miter gauge, miter gauge not included.

What Are Box Joints, and Why Are They Popular in Woodworking?

Box joints are a type of interlocking corner joint used extensively in woodworking. Characterized by their repetitive square or rectangular cutouts, these joints interconnect much like a series of fingers, making them a staple for constructing boxes, drawers, and other storage pieces.

Advantages of Box Joints:

  • Strength and Durability: Known for their robust structure, box joints offer remarkable strength. The interlocking nature distributes stress evenly, making them less prone to breaking under pressure.

  • Ease of Crafting: Compared to other complex joints, creating box joints is relatively straightforward. You can use various tools, from hand tools like dovetail saws to machinery such as routers or table saws with specialized jigs.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: Box joints are not only practical but also visually appealing. Their precise, geometric design adds a touch of craftsmanship, enhancing the overall beauty of the finished piece.

Popularity in Woodworking:

Woodworkers favor box joints for their blend of simplicity and utility. Their popularity is also driven by the fact that they do not require expensive tools to create, making them accessible to hobbyists and professionals alike. Moreover, they provide an excellent way to maximize the glue surface area, ensuring even adhesive distribution and a tight bond.

In essence, box joints are a go-to choice in woodworking for anyone seeking a reliable, attractive, and efficient solution for assembling pieces.

Once I figured out how to set it up it worked great

I originally bought the 4555 jig and used it with the Freud box joint dado set. I was pleased that it worked as well as it did compared to other jigs I've used. Then I bought the 4553 Upgrade kit. While it works OK without the upgrade kit, it does provide some nice enhancements. The holes didn't line up in the Miter Gauge Adapter so I just made my own to fit my miter gauge. I wasn't able to use the sawdust deflector because it got in the way of clamping my work piece. The little STOP worked real nice when I had to make an adjustment. Nice touch! I'm pleased with it and would recommend it.
